32 Years Ago Today

32 years ago today.   At Live Tonight!!! in NJ.  The first band I played a gig with in NYC, playing bass.

Was a great time, the band was "The Current"  We did a mix of originals and covers, mainly originals, but covers included "Why?"  "Paint It Black", "Solitary Man", "Live For Today", "Black Is Black", "Tears Of A Clown" and the tune in the video.  "It's Not unusual," which is kind of funny because @Spin just did a piece on Tom Jones and his new album.

"It's Not Unusual" was on the first demo we did.  In a semi-Spinal Tap/cliché rock and roll type thing, the drummer never showed up.   So the owner of the studio, Steve Missal,  sat in on drums.  It just so happens he was the drummer who played on Billy Idol's first album including the hit "White Wedding."  (Really nice guy.)  In addition to It's Not Unusual, we also recorded a couple of originals.  So I went into the booth and air drummed in front of Steve to try to give him an idea what was happening.  Way too funny.

I do have copies of the demo, and our two originals. But for some reason, It's Not Unusual is really garbled.  I am not sure if I messed up when digitizing it all those years ago or the tape was bad.  I am hoping to find the tapes again and see if I have a good copy.  (We even did a dance style remix during all of it.)

My Dad recorded this show and considering the age of the tape and technology, it is not too bad.  I am pretty sure it is the best (only?) version of the song I have.  My friend recently tweaked the audio a bit, did a great job. There is a section where the is no video, just audio.  Something happened to the lights for a bit.  We kept on playing 🙂
